About ICU Decoded

Last updated 30 August 2026

ICU Decoded is a bedside reference for acute medicine: 91 ICU chapters, 119 decision pathways, 113 worked ward cases and 50 calculators. It exists because the thing you need at 3am is not a textbook chapter — it is the next three steps, in order, with the dose already worked out.

Every pathway here was written by one person who has stood at the bedside the material describes — two years of intensive care practice, a year of emergency medicine, and ward work. That is the reason it is organised the way it is — around the sequence of decisions you actually make under time pressure, rather than around the structure of a syllabus.

It also means this is the work of a trainee, not a committee of subspecialists, and you should hold it to that standard: as a well-organised study and recall aid built from published guidelines, to be checked against your seniors, your local protocol and the primary source before it changes what you do.

How the content is made

Corrections

Clinical corrections are the most useful message anyone can send, and they are acted on before anything else. If something here is wrong, out of date, or ambiguous enough to be misread at 3am, email contact@icudecodedd.com with the page and the problem.

How it is funded

Hosting, the database and the assistant all cost money to run. Two things pay for that: advertising on the free pages, and subscriptions.

Everything is free in full — every ward case, every ICU chapter, every pathway and every calculator, with no account needed. A subscription buys one thing: no advertising anywhere, plus the Ask assistant. Ads are never placed inside a calculator, next to a dose, or on anything you print.

This is not medical advice. ICU Decoded is an educational reference for healthcare professionals. Read the medical disclaimer before using anything here clinically.
